Selective School Preparation
Course Overview
Our Premium Selective School Preparation Programme is a comprehensive, year-long course designed to equip students with the skills and strategies needed to excel in selective school entrance exams. The programme is structured around well-planned, test-focused content that targets all key components of the exam, including reading, writing, mathematics, and abstract reasoning.
Each session runs for 3 hours per week and is carefully designed to build test-taking confidence and competence. Students complete regular practice papers under strict time conditions to simulate the real exam environment, helping them develop speed, accuracy, and resilience under pressure.
In addition to test practice, students receive personalised feedback and targeted support to strengthen specific areas of need. Our goal is to ensure every student is thoroughly prepared, feels confident on exam day, and has the best chance of gaining entry into their preferred selective school.
- Melbourne High School (boys only) in South Yarra.
- The Mac. Robertson Girls’ High School (girls only) in Melbourne.
- Nossal High School (all genders) in Berwick.

The exam takes approximately four hours in total, including registration, exam time,
and scheduled breaks. The actual testing time is 2 hours and 35 minutes.
The exam consists of several sections that include multiple-choice questions and
written tasks, organised as follows:
- Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning – 60 minutes
- Break – 20 minutes
- Reading and Verbal Reasoning – 55 minutes
- Short Break – 5 minutes
- Writing – 40 minutes
- Mathematics: Assesses year-level mathematical knowledge, reasoning skills, and the ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations.
- Quantitative Reasoning: Evaluates the ability to think logically and reason using numbers, patterns, and shapes in both abstract and practical contexts.
- Reading: Measures the ability to locate and retrieve information, as well as interpret, analyse, and evaluate ideas presented in written texts.
- Verbal Reasoning: Assesses the ability to think logically using words, concepts, and language-based reasoning.
- Writing: Evaluates the ability to communicate ideas clearly using precise language and well-organised structure. The writing section includes two tasks.
The exam is designed to challenge students and assess a range of academic and reasoning skills.
Answer Booklet
Candidates must record all their responses in the answer booklet provided during the exam.
For the reasoning sections, answers to multiple-choice questions must be indicated by shading the appropriate option in the answer booklet. It is important that candidates carefully follow the instructions given on the day to ensure their responses can be accurately read by the machine scanners.
Exam Strategies
The entrance exam is designed to assess a range of skills, including problem-solving, reasoning, creative thinking, comprehension, interpretation, and the application of known concepts to different situations. These abilities develop gradually through regular exposure to learning opportunities, engaging activities, and environments that encourage students to think critically and discuss ideas openly. The knowledge required for the exam will not exceed the Year 8 curriculum.
Effective time management is essential during the exam. Candidates should be familiar with the types of tasks they will complete, and the time allocated for each section. It is important not to spend too long on a single question. If a question is particularly difficult, candidates may consider making an educated guess and returning to it later if time allows.
